Alexander Technique Lessons

Develop strength and ease

Human being but with less effort :-)

A lesson lasts about 45 minutes and is usually a mixture of chair work and table (lying down) work. The aim is always to make progress in your understanding so you can continue the practice for yourself.

"My spine feels like it's filled with helium!"

— Dr P Joyce

This page shows some pictures from a lesson with Graham Hoey, author and rock climber extraordinaire. This is table work...

Chair work (movement!)

We may spend time sitting and standing from a chair. Not because you need to know how to stand up(!), but because this movement contains much that will transfer to your daily life. Also —importantly— each movement is a chance to refine the thought processes that the technique requires of us. They are subtle and the more practice you have the better you will get at it!

The experience

You might get the experience of moving with less effort. Actually not just of moving, but of being alive with less effort! People describe the feeling as lightness, ease, feeling taller, freer, more spontaeous even...

Cost and location

Lessons are £55.

I work from Harrow (HA1) and St Albans (AL1).

  • Harrow – street parking, excellent public transport

  • St Albans – easy parking or bus from the city centre

My body already feels more at ease

As soon as Alice puts her hands on me I feel a sense of calm and expansion as if I am being seen, heard and 'safeguarded' by her hands.

After only 3 lessons my body already feels different: more at ease; less back, neck and shoulder pain; more freedom of movement and just more in my body. I'm really enjoying the process and really recommend trying a session, especially if you are dealing with chronic pain from your every day life!

— Tam A

Lasting relief from chronic pain

Several years ago I nearly lost my left foot in a serious accident. The surgeons saved the foot but it is not squarely attached to the leg. Over the years the irregular gait meant that I started to feel pain in the knee and hip which prevented me from enjoying walking and also sleeping on my left-hand side. Alice worked on my general posture, which she quickly managed to reset.

I have recovered my natural gait and the knee and hip pain have reduced significantly. I am now enjoying long walks and can sleep on my left-hand side again. I strongly recommend Alice to anyone suffering from chronic pain that prevents them from enjoying life to the full.

— Dr Phil Joyce

Excellent teacher

As a fellow Alexander Technique teacher, I find Alice to have a really thoughtful, perceptive and skilled approach. Alice's hands are quiet, clear and non-doing, and impart a sense of non-judgement and safety. The energetic and effective quality of her hands leave me feeling effortlessly upright and as light as air.

We have been exploring the connection between the lifting of the chest and its impact on breathing and the lower back which I have been finding extremely useful.

Alice is extremely skilled. She has a brilliant pair of hands and a very accessible way of explaining the key principles of the technique. I would highly recommend Alice.

It's all about movement!

From my climbing life (also about freedom and independence)

Clear teaching that builds confidence

If you are in two minds about a course with Alice, let me reassure you. Alice is, simply, a brilliant climbing instructor. Not only does she really understand the sport, she knows how to communicate her knowledge clearly and in a way that builds your confidence and your understanding.

Even if you do something completely wrong, Alice will put you right in a way that helps you improve without making you feel an idiot. After 3-days with Alice, I improved my technique, my knowledge and my confidence in my abilities to the point at which I really can't wait to get onto the gritstone again.

— Ivor M

Freedom and understanding

The training over a two day course in trad climbing with Alice has given me the freedom and understanding of awareness, technique and equipment, to get out there and enjoy the experience of climbing in a new way. The course was thorough and challenging, with a clear link between the theory and practice, making it easy to learn and work into my approach to and style of climbing.
